This presentation will teach some new methods for empowering your clients to think critically under pressure and testify in a way that demonstrates competence, confidence and compassion.  The old rules are thrown out in favor of getting your clients to advance their defense in deposition and during cross-examination at trial so that they are effectively communicating in a thoughtful and convincing way.

    MEET OUR SPEAKERS

Mark Basurto has 29+ years of litigation and courtroom experience. He has tried over 50 jury trials and handled hundreds of evidentiary hearings in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitration with the American Arbitration Association, the National Association of Securities Dealers and JAMS. As Attorney Manager for CogentEdge, he brings significant experience representing a variety of different professionals in malpractice cases and representing both publicly and privately held companies in high stakes litigation. From his diverse experience, Mr. Basurto understands that even the most sophisticated professionals who get sued have difficulty speaking their truth because of fear, anxiety or a misunderstanding of the litigation process. As a result, his current witness preparation practice is focused on empowering professionals with the skills and confidence needed to take command of their testimony and ultimately drive the case to a successful result.

Mr. Basurto graduated from Emory University School of Law and is licensed to practice law in Florida, Georgia and Oregon.  He and his family moved from Florida to Oregon in 2018.

Roger S. Burdick was appointed by Gov. Kempthorne as the 53rd Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court in 2003.  He won reelection in 2004, 2010 and 2016, and served his second four-year term as Chief Justice. He presided over the Snake River Basin Adjudication and as Administrative Judge for the Fifth Judicial District; was appointed as District Judge, Twin Falls County; and as Magistrate Judge, Jerome County, after being in private practice for six years with Hart & Burdick in Jerome and Webb, Pike, Burton & Carlson in Twin Falls.  He served on various Idaho Supreme Court advisory committees, including as Chair of the Idaho Administrative Rule 32 Committee; Chair of the Idaho Judicial Council; and was on the CCJ working group for implementation of “Call to Action: Achieving Civil Justice for All”; and the Board of Directors of the Conference of Chief Justices.  He earned his JD at the University of Idaho, College of Law. Former Chief Justice Burdick and his wife, Rachel, have two sons.

In addition to being insanely handsome, John Janis is one of the most successful civil trial attorneys in Idaho.  He has tried multiple injury and employment cases with seven figure verdicts in venues around the state.  He has been with the firm that is now Hepworth Holzer, LLP since 1990.  AV rated, he has been elected to The American Board of Trial Advocates, is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and a past President of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association.  He has served on the Idaho Civil Jury Instruction, Rules of Evidence and Civil Justice Reform Committees at the request of the Idaho Supreme Court. He is a proud Vandal who graduated with Honors from U of I’s School of Law in 1986.

Mr. Janis lectures frequently on civil trial skills and other matters. If you ask him, he will explain he is unquestionably the most fun person in his office where his partners adore him for his legal acumen, sense of style, and humility.

Abigail Manzano-Grant has been part of the ARV family since 2015. In 2020, she completed an intensive focus group moderator course through the Burke Institute, equipping her with the tools to make focus groups in the legal arena just as effective as they are in the marketing and advertising sectors. Her unique training and perspective help clients gain valuable insight about their case as a whole and, perhaps more importantly, how to effectively communicate the facts of their case to judges, mediators, and juries.

Andrea Wecker, CSR, RDR, CRR, CRC, is the owner of Associated Reporting & Video in Boise, Idaho. She has spent more than 20 years in the litigation industry working as a court reporter, trial technologist, and focus group consultant. ARV’s sister company, ARV Dynamic, has assisted law firms all over the country with focus groups and jury research with its outside-the-box approach to case strategy.
